How to write a matrimonial profile that gets noticed

October 2026 · 5 min read

Your matrimonial profile is often the very first introduction between you and another family. Before anyone calls, meets or sends a message, they read your profile and decide whether they want to know more.

A good profile does not need fancy words. It needs to be honest, specific and warm. Here is how to write one that stands out for the right reasons.

1. Start with the right photo

Most people look at the photo before they read a single word. A clear, natural photo builds trust immediately.

  • Use a recent photo, taken in the last six months.
  • Make sure your face is clearly visible, in good natural light.
  • Smile. A warm expression matters more than a perfect pose.
  • Add one close-up and one full-length photo if you can.
  • Avoid sunglasses, heavy filters and group photos where it is unclear which person is you.
  • Dress the way you would to meet a family for the first time.

2. Write an About Me that sounds like you

Almost every profile says “simple, down to earth, family oriented”. Those words are true for many people, so they do not help anyone get to know you.

Instead, share specific details. What do you enjoy on a Sunday? What are you proud of? What makes you laugh? For example: “I am a civil engineer in Pune who loves weekend treks and is still trying to make poha as good as my mother’s.” One real sentence like this says more than ten general adjectives.

3. Share your family background honestly

In Indian matchmaking, families read this part carefully. Mention your parents’ occupations, your siblings, where your family is based, and whether you live in a joint or nuclear family. A few lines about your family’s values, traditions or way of life help the other family imagine how the two families might come together.

4. Be clear about what you are looking for

Describe the qualities you hope for in a partner, such as kindness, ambition, respect for family or a sense of humour, rather than a checklist of looks. If something truly matters to you, like being open to relocation, a particular diet, or wanting to live near your parents, say it politely and clearly. It saves time and heartache for everyone.

5. Fill in every detail

Profiles with a photo and complete details receive far more interest than half-filled ones. On Haldi Kalash, the profile completion bar on your My Profile page shows how much is left. Aim for 100%.

6. If a parent is writing the profile

Many Indian families search together, and that is wonderful. If a parent is managing the profile, say so, for example “This profile is managed by my mother”. Most importantly, make sure your son or daughter has agreed to the profile and helped write the About Me, so it truly reflects them.

7. Final checks before you save

  • Read it aloud once. Does it sound like a real person?
  • Check spelling and grammar.
  • Do not put your phone number, home address or workplace address in your bio, for your safety.
  • Avoid negative lines like “no time-wasters”. Keep the tone positive and welcoming.

A thoughtful profile is the first step towards the right rishta. Take your time, be yourself, and let the right person find you.
